The Textile to Tech Journey of Chettiar Industrialist C. Valliappa by Chitra Narayanan

Every ancient Indian industrialist family's history inexorably begins with textiles. The Textile King of the South, the grandfather of Mr. C. Valliappa, was in a comparable bind. Mr. Valliappa was influenced by Gandhian ideals and his forefathers' textile legacy. However, a series of unfortunate incidents and labor disputes in the late 1990s led to a sharp decline in revenue.

In a motivational story of self-reinvention, Mr. Valliappa rose back up and turned his focus to IT. Sona Towers was founded in Bengaluru by Mr. Valliappa in the 1980s, and it became the foundation of India's IT industry as well as the focal point of the telecom and consumer revolutions in India. Sona Towers housed Titan's, VSNL's, and Texas Instruments' initial offices. An extraordinary individual, Mr. Valliappa started building homes at the age of 75 and went on to build more than a thousand homes.

The Sona Story explores Mr. Valliappa's extraordinary career and personal journey, as well as the early years of India's IT industry. It narrates the story of Mr. C. Valliappa, a real entrepreneur who broke with tradition while being loyal to his heritage and includes 24 pages of behind-the-scenes photographs that will take you back to the fascinating past of the Chettiar community.
